This story, though it is inferior to them at their best, is in the tradition of Poe’s analytical tales and the Sherlock Holmes stories. Christie wrote a version of herself into several of her stories in the person of mystery writer and apple-lover Ariadne Oliver.

It is hard to say much without giving away the melodrama of the ending. In any case, this is one of the greatest mystery novels I have ever read, not only because there is no way to guess who the killer is, but also because of the way the dd unravels without putting the reader’s mind at ease even aackroyd a second. Poirot narrates this tale but there is something in the words he uses to describe some of the people that just makes it seem odd.

It would be true in this case too if it were not for Erle Stanley Gardner. The plot is so overconstructed and convoluted that it ends up with this “I guess it could be anyone” sort of feel and I’m not going to sit and make timelines and diagrams to figure it out for myself, so just tell me already so we can move se.

There are many I have never read. The next year, she became the President of the Detection Club. The humor helped the story and there seemed to be a deeper connection with some of the characters compared to other Agatha books. Besides the slow moving story, the twist at the end was hardly a “twist” and had been heavily hinted at during the end of the story, and the ending seemed like an easy way out for the author.
