As advertised, it is not a traditional or conventional novel—perhaps not a novel at all. That’s where Flights lost me. Much of what is presented to the reader has been drained of tokarczuo, dissected out, beautifully preserved, and put on display for careful inspection.

There is the fictional story of a Flemish surgeon who identified the Achilles tendon by dissecting his own amputated leg.

Some stories felt well composed others particularly the ancient historical ones did nothing for me or my appreciation for this book or author.


The only thing that threw me was when one character diced parsley. Tokarczuk’s first book was published ina collection of vieguni entitled Miasta w lustrach “Cities in Mirrors”. Usually I would roll my eyes at the latter, but here it works, because Tokarczuk presents it so modestly–no “look at me undermining paradigms! At this case, there is connection between the texts and also it would be some places you visit only once.


The book encompasses very different texts, thus employing a typical modernist composition technique: It’s very contemporary in its form and expression and biegunni my short exposure to it, not interested in telling a comprehensive story.
